Once when in Paris i was fortunate enough to catch a show of his works. I am a francophile, French speaker, and a student of that very complex culture of post revolutionary France, as well as an art history bush. OK we don't see it as it was originally intenede, but here it is really exciting. However, if I am honest, I found the almost hour long part with Collette Marchand as his prostitute "friend" to be tiresome.

Highly recomended even if it is not particilarly historically accurate. I think anyone who feels for people getting treated badly because they are infirm, or anybody who is infirm themselves will love this movie.

Not to mention the opening scene has incredible camera shots rivaling, if not pioneering, the tracking shot from "Boogie Nights". Jose Ferrer as the crippled Toulouse-Lautrec was so believable that one could almost believe that he was actually crippled himself. Ferrar is great, anfd fun can be had spotting all the great British character actors. I've seen better DVD's with much better color and sharpness than this bluray. I had high hopes when seeing that it was available. Kath as La Goulue and Muriel Smith as her rival Aicha excell in their roles and have two spirited fights.

This is one of my five favorite movies for the acting, the settings, and the marvelous color that mimicked Lautrec's use of color. I found my eyes tear up at the end, but I understand there is an artistic license to every biopic. I saw the BLURAY and found the transfer excellent. I found myself grieving for the artist, who never seemed to be able to find true love - even from his father. Why, oh, Why no Blu-ray? This was a very well made movie that seemed a bit racy for its time. When I did see it, it immediately jumped on my favorite films list. What are you doing? The great Jose Ferrer does a yeoman's job in this film, where he gets to walk around on his knees in what was probably the world's most painful acting gig. What a dance the "CAN-CAN" is , such music, such excitement!

Director John Huston dazzles and captivates with this dry and thirsty drama. I saw it when I was in school back in the 50's---this very same original cast==--and loved it then. The scenes in the Moulin Rouge, and Lautrec's workings and efforts at printmaking and his later life work exceedingly well. The original is still the greatest!
