The second installment in Lars von Trier's trilogy, USA: Land of Opprtunity, is a maor disappointment, "Manderlay" shows von Trier learning from that film's stylistic mistakes to make an ambitious and thought-provoking allegory about the ways in which "slavery" in America was never truly abolished, but rather converted to a different condition of capitalis, The percentage of Approved Tomatometer Critics who have given this movie a positive review. Lars von Trier’s Dogville (2003) is a concentrated blend of subtle storytelling and stylish filmmaking. This is a thought/reflection piece of work by Von Trier (his stuff generally is, but this is primary that) and the brilliance of the man’s mind is evident. Every time I think of this film's title, I always think of that line in "Wild is the Wind" that goes, "I hear the sound of mandolins", only I think, "I hear the sounds of Manderlay", and it's always Nina Simone's version in particular that I'm thinking of. Although Manderlay is an interesting film, it is not a very important film.

In 1933, after leaving Dogville, Grace Margaret Mulligan sees a slave being punished at a cotton farm called Manderlay. Without giving away any spoilers, I just want to say that the ending was not what I expected but exactly what I wanted and I was thrilled.

While subtlety most certainly still stands to go augmented, the supporting characters within this film feel less like the devices the characters of "Dogville" were and more human in their limited layers, and each performer nails that as thoroughly as they can with messy character writing, which is actually pretty darn thorough, with each person delivering on haunting atmosphere, as well as distinctiveness and believability in their portrayal of people thrusted into a lifestyle they're not prepared for that will change them, for both the good and bad, but especially the bad.

3/5 - Good. It's our abuses have made them what they are. When push comes to shove, you've made everything worse, like you did with Tweety. This, shot in a kind of big warehouse, strips the narrative down to its essential story. They won't be able to see your review if you only submit your rating.

For these slower points, credit is also due to the simple fact that, while the film is considerably shorter than its predecessor, it remains quite lengthy, yet with subject matter that doesn't terribly warrant such lengthiness, thus leaving repetition to set in, so that the film can break even.

Manderlay is both more coherent and more obvious than Dogville, which lacked the clean narrative drive of the new film. Dogville was a masterpiece to which Manderlay is a fascinating footnote. All Critics (104)
