2019 was a pretty odd year for video games. But it’s a really interesting roleplaying game with a unique setting, lots of different ways to approach each quest and some surprisingly good acting and graphics. Everyone is playing on the same maps, with new free content released regularly. Parrying is paramount, and thanks to Sekiro’s various prosthetic tools, you can mix up combat and level traversal in truly awesome ways. In it, you play through the lens of an artificial intelligence system, known as S.A.M, that is tasked to aid a  medical officer who must repair an isolated space station to locate survivors and coordinate a rescue mission. Judgment is intricate, gripping, full of heart, and it's an S-tier series starter that redefines the crime-solving genre. Apex Legends ranks lower not because it isn’t as good, but because I have to play in squads of three and because it’s battle royale only, whereas Modern Warfare has many different modes and options. It's no mere graphical remaster. Set in Washington D.C. years after the outbreak that eliminated so much of the population in the first game, you have to fight back against multiple factions and regain control of the capital city. There's also plenty of side content to tackle, including a series of mysterious riddles to solve and bosses to kill, along with a number of PvP areas called the Dark Zone where you can hunt down other players for their new loot.

One second, you'll find yourself lost in a plot that is equal parts Hot Topic, Fury Road, and Showdown in Little Tokyo, and by the next, you'll be headbanging the night away as you hack and slash enemies with motorcycle swords. It’s a complete oddity next to the seven other generations of Pokémon, but Sword and Shield are modern interpretations of the old-school Red and Blue that will easily take over your life.
