Wow! After I finished reading it I proceeded to read all the glowing, rave reviews from my Goodread friends and members and quite frankly, I just don't get why all the glowing, rave reviews! It's a great story and it's hard to go totally wrong with it, but it's an old fashioned story, and more slow and steady than filled with amazing or surprising turns and emotional insights. In the movie ETHAN FROME, based on Edith Wharton’s 1911 novel, we are first introduced to a crippled Ethan (Liam Neeson) hobbling about his hometown of Starkfield, Massachusetts, through the new preacher. I hope things have changed since. I somehow always feel I must assign many types of superlatives to the magnificent & spectacular Edith Wharton! Liam Neeson is entirely convincing in this role.
In a little less than 200 pages, she conveys a sense of bleakness so complete that it borders on the sadistic.

Wharton came from the high society of New York City which she so adeptly portrayed in The Age of Innocence and The House of Mirth. I have been on a bit of a four-star roll recently and am beginning to fear that I accidentally pressed against my generous ratings button when I was slumped against the bookcase last week trying to figure out what to read next.
The classic novel of despair, forbidden emotions, and sexual undercurrents set against the austere New England countryside. I started reading this on the Serial Reader app but finally paid for the full version so I didn't have to wait so long to finish it.
What Zeena cannot foresee is the attraction that develops during the course of a year between her husband and Mattie. Admittedly, they succeed in providing excellent motivation for her nastiness, but the audience doesn't develop much empathy -- or sympathy -- for her. Everything about him, from his mimicking of the injured man's walk to the pained facial expressions in close-ups, shows how in touch he is with the role. But Madden doesn't give us a reason to see the movie instead of reading the book, and "Ethan Frome" is a very long slog through grim pastures.
