Apartment 1303 3D is a remake of the Japanese movie Apartment 1303 that was directed by Ataru Oikawa and released in 2007.

The movie devotes its time to introducing characters through hollow actions and B plots so unimportant that the film actually forgets about them. Not one of those tears falls towards her dead sister. Yukiyo’s hair does this crazy thing where it shoots out of her head in tendril-like tentacles, spreading throughout the room and capturing anyone who tries to escape.

Here is one of those horror movies where viewers scream out because it's just do darn stupid. For a J-Horror, this film hits all the necessary components with a creepy girl, murder mystery to uncover, and plenty of hair scares, but it's a fairly uneven film that doesn't embrace the aspects that make the genre so fascinating. In contrast, the American film pretty much laid out the entire background of mommy issues in the first fifteen minutes, TELLING us that the mother was an abusive alcoholic instead of letting us SEE it in the way they interact with each other. While not completely terrible, Apartment 1303 passes the time with decent performances from the most of its cast, and a few (and I mean a few), creepy moments - although hardly anything to give you a chill such as The Grudge and The Ring did on many occasions.…, this movie was so bad that it was good. When she is seen breaking down in despair, it is because she is worried that she might be losing her mind. Mariko reads a book on the original tenants, the ones who started the rash of suicides, and we are shown exactly what happens in their story through a series of flashbacks. She also hears her sister’s voice through Sayaka’s old cell phone while at home with her mother.

The American remake follows much of the same storyline, though it is nowhere as good as the original (as in, if it weren’t for this article, I would have stopped watching it after the first 15 minutes).

Had “Apartment 1303” intentionally meant for her to seem like a hopeless dimwit, it would have been successful. It’s creepy, haunting, dark and gritty, and shows the true horror of what happens when the love between a mother and daughter goes terribly wrong (or worse, isn’t there to begin with).

To what end that is relevant to the overall plot is unknown. We could see the tension in the characters’ faces when mother and daughter are near each other; we can understand that it’s not a healthy relationship by the way they look at (or refuse to look at) each other.

J-Horror at its weakest - but at least the soundtrack think its scary. In the Japanese film, characters didn’t need to monologue their thoughts.
