A letter from Dr. Jontyle Theresa Robinson discussing the work accompanies the lot. In 1969, while Douglas had been retired from Fisk University for three years, he continued to paint and exhibit his artwork. A very good, dark impression of this scarce print.
During the 1930s Douglas returned intermittently to Fisk where he served as assistant professor of art education; in 1940 he accepted a full-time position in the art department. His signature style developed from these murals - a series of concentric circles expanded from a fixed point, figure elements superimposed on its background. However, as Susan Earle points out, Locke later chose The Street Urchin as one of the illustrations of Aaron Douglas' paintings in his 1940 book The Negro in Art. In 1937, he founded and chaired the Art Department at Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee, where he remained involved until 1966. This charming landscape is one of the earliest examples that we have located of Aaron Douglas' watercolors from his travels abroad while teaching at Fisk University. Thompson lists the twelve paintings that were included in his April solo exhibition in New York; The Street Urchin is one of only two figurative subjects.
